Archer: We Showed So Much Heart
DELIGHTED American captain Johnny Archer hailed his side's character as they fought back to retain the 2006 PartyPoker.com Mosconi Cup.
The USA side had trailed 4-8, 6-9 and 10-12 and were only one shot away from losing the cup for only the third time in 13 years.
But they kept fighting right until the end as Mike Davis and then Corey Deuel won the last two singles matches under intense pressure in front of a partisan packed out Dutch crowd.
A delighted Archer said: "We were behind the whole week and I don't know what to say about my guys. I'm choked up a bit. Earl and I know we let the team down today (they both lost their singles matches) and we were hurting but we gave it our all.
"The European team outplayed us this week but we showed a lot of heart. Mike Davis played wonderfully and he's never been in this situation before and Corey deserved the MVP (Most Valuable Player) by far.
"Nobody understands what pressure you're under and the European guys as well. It's really tough to explain it, all you can do is your best."
Archer was full of praise for Matchroom Sport chairman Barry Hearn and the supporters who packed out the Cruise Terminal, Rotterdam and created an incredible atmosphere for each of the sessions.
"Thank you to Barry Hearn for making this event happen. He's the one that gets to sit back on his recliner and laugh at us as we make mistakes," joked Archer.
"Thank you to all the fans. You were against us but we knew what it would be like. You guys make the event. "If we didn't have you guys we couldn't come back. It makes it hard but gratifying when you win."
